Strongest answer91/100
Q5 · System Design
Separated read/write paths, proposed consistent hash ring for sharding, added Redis cache. Proactively addressed redirect latency, hash collision handling, and graceful degradation under cache miss.
Why it worked: Proactive coverage of failure modes showed genuine system design depth beyond the happy path.
Weakest answer54/100
Q9 · Trade-offs
Outlined consistency vs availability options accurately but declined to commit. Ended with "it depends on requirements" without specifying which requirements would tip the decision.
What went wrong: Correct framing but no decision — interviewers need a recommendation, not a list.
Coaching Priorities
01
Make a Decision
Trade-off questions test judgment, not your ability to list options. "It depends" is not an answer. Pick a side, name the condition, defend it.
Your exercise
Take three classic trade-offs and for each write one sentence committing to a choice and one defending it. Rehearse stating the choice in the first 10 seconds.
02
Lead With the Constraint
Most answers started with background before the key insight. The listener needs to know where you're going in the first sentence.

What lands in your inbox
five minutes after the call.
Not a summary. Not a rating out of five stars. A full coaching assessment — scored, calibrated to your level, and specific enough to act on before your next interview.
Know exactly where you stand.
Every session produces a score from 1–100, calibrated to your seniority level. The verdict — Hire, Conditional Hire, or Not Yet — is based on the same criteria a real interviewer uses. No grade inflation.
It listened to every word.
Your score per question plotted across the session. Your most-used words. How long you talked versus the interviewer. How many times you were pushed back on. The specialist's own read on what defined your session — in their voice, about your answers.
See the gaps you didn't know you had.
Eleven dimensions scored individually — from how you open answers to how you defend decisions under pressure. Each cell shows a score, a bar, and a one-line observation from your actual session. Not generic advice. Your session.
Replay the moments that mattered.
Your strongest and weakest answer, side by side. A paraphrase of what you actually said, the score it earned, and a one-sentence explanation of why it worked — or didn't. The clearest signal in the report.
Leave with a drill, not a suggestion.
Three coaching priorities ranked by impact, each with a specific exercise you can do before your next interview. Not "practice your answers." More like: "Record yourself — first sentence must state the outcome before any context."

Make a Decision
Trade-off questions are testing your judgment, not your ability to list options. "It depends" is not an answer. Pick a side, name the condition that tipped it, and defend it.
Your exercise
Take three classic trade-offs (consistency vs availability, SQL vs NoSQL, monolith vs microservices) and for each write one sentence committing to a choice and one defending it. Rehearse stating the choice in the first 10 seconds.
02
Lead With the Constraint
Most answers started with background before revealing the key technical insight. The listener needs to know where you are going in the first sentence.
Your exercise
For five past technical stories, rewrite the opening sentence to lead with the constraint — e.g. "The bottleneck was the write path, not the read path." Rehearse until the constraint lands before any context.

Example question — from a full Marketing Manager session
Maya asks: "Tell me about a campaign you ran that didn't perform as expected. What happened and what did you do?"
● Live voice session · Marketing Manager
Maya Tell me about a campaign you ran that didn't perform as expected. What happened and what did you do?
Alex We launched a paid social campaign for a B2B SaaS product targeting mid-market HR teams. Two weeks in, CPL was 40% above target and conversion from lead to demo was under 3%. Instead of killing it, I paused spend, pulled the landing page data, and found an audience-message mismatch — we were targeting HR directors but the pain point in the copy was written for recruiters. We rebuilt the creative in 4 days, relaunched, and closed the gap to within 8% of target by end of quarter.

How we built this
Designed with the people who make hiring decisions

Each specialist was designed in collaboration with senior practitioners in their field — sales directors, product leaders, engineering managers, CFOs, HR executives, marketing leaders, consultants, CS leaders, data scientists, and operations executives. The questions they ask, the dimensions they evaluate, and the feedback they give reflect real hiring standards at the top of each profession. This isn't generic AI feedback. It's role-specific coaching built on how actual hiring decisions get made.

The Interview Lab was built by two people who have spent their careers on the hiring side of the table — between them, 40+ years deciding who gets hired, and why.

Jodi Yanovich
VP of Human Resources · Career & Interview Coach

20+ years in hi-tech leading HR and talent functions, with a parallel career coaching professionals through interviews and career moves. She knows what interviewers actually look for — because she's run those hiring processes and coached the people on both sides of them.

Common questions
How does the AI interview work?+
You choose a specialist, enter your email, and start a voice conversation directly in your browser — no downloads required. The specialist asks real interview questions, adapts to your answers, and pushes back when answers are vague. Within minutes of the call ending, a detailed PDF assessment report is sent to your email.
Who created these specialists?+
The Interview Lab was built by Jodi and Tomer Yanovich — a VP of Human Resources and career/interview coach, and a VP of Product, each with 20+ years in hi-tech and decades on the hiring side of the table. Each specialist's questions, scoring dimensions, and feedback frameworks reflect how real hiring decisions get made across each profession. This isn't generic AI — it's role-specific coaching grounded in real interviewing and hiring experience.
What's the difference between the free and paid session?+
The free session is a free preview — you get a taste of the interview and a short email report with one key strength and one hard truth. The full session ($25) is up to 40 minutes, covers the complete interview flow for your role, and delivers a detailed PDF report scored across 6 dimensions with a Hire / No-Hire verdict and specific coaching priorities.
What if there's no specialist for my exact role?+
Choose the specialist that feels closest to your function. At the start of the session, they'll ask what position you're interviewing for and adapt their questions accordingly. A Sales specialist works well for business development, account management, and revenue roles. A Product specialist works well for growth, strategy, and operations roles.
What languages are supported?+
Sessions are available in 10 languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Russian, and Portuguese. The specialists automatically detect your language from your first response and continue in that language for the rest of the session. If you switch languages mid-session, they'll follow.
Will the AI judge my accent or speaking style?+
No. The specialists evaluate content, clarity, and structure — not accent, background, or speaking style. The scoring is focused on what you say and how you structure your answers, not how you sound. The system is designed to minimize bias and assess how effectively you communicate your ideas.
What if I get nervous or don't perform well?+
That's exactly why this exists. Nerves in a practice environment are normal and expected — the report will flag what to work on and you can come back for another session. Repeated practice in a realistic setting is what builds confidence. A shorter, rougher session often produces the most useful feedback.
Is my data private?+
Yes. We collect only your email address (to send your report) and your session transcript (to generate the report). We don't collect your name, location, or any other personal information. Your transcript is processed to generate your report and not stored on our systems beyond that. Full details are in our Privacy Policy.
Is this right for me if I'm early in my career?+
Absolutely. The specialists work with candidates at every level — from first-time interviewers to senior professionals making a move. If anything, the earlier you practice with honest, structured feedback, the faster you improve. The free session is a low-stakes way to find out exactly where you stand before your real interview.
How is this different from just practicing with ChatGPT?+
Four things ChatGPT can't replicate. First, it won't push back — by design it's agreeable, so when you give a vague or weak answer it moves on rather than holding the pressure. A real interviewer doesn't. Our specialists are built to probe, challenge, and stay uncomfortable when your answer isn't good enough. Second, it doesn't know your role. A generic AI asks generic questions. Marcus knows what a sales interview at a Series B startup looks for versus an enterprise company. Sofia knows what a PM interview actually tests at different seniority levels. That calibration comes from practitioners who've run those interviews for decades. Third, the output is different. ChatGPT gives you a conversational response that evaporates. We give you a scored report across 11 dimensions, a Hire or No-Hire verdict, a benchmark against other candidates, and three specific coaching exercises — something you can act on before your next interview. Fourth, it's voice. The anxiety of an interview is about being on the spot in real time, speaking, being heard, having someone respond to your actual words. Typing answers into a chat box doesn't simulate that at all.
Do I need to download anything?+
No. Everything runs directly in your browser. You'll need a working microphone and a modern browser (Chrome or Safari work best). No apps, no plugins, no accounts to create.
